What needs to be learned is, being unapologetic for the things you choose to do for your well-being. Instead of feeling burdened with unrealistic societal norms one must know how to move on. Your goals and your dreams belong only to you and no one else. Stop worrying about what people will say. (Also read: Become A Better Version Of Yourself With These Four Steps)
The way you have tricked your brain into sticking to your commitments, similarly make it believe, quitting is not a proof of failure. By doing so, you will prepare yourself for the times when you have the instinct to withdraw for your own good.
Be it a relationship, a job or a business project, you can definitely choose to quit. But the big question is, WHEN? When is the ideal time to quit?
1. When you are constantly getting negative vibes: Everyone has to take the bad that comes with the good. But, this does not mean that you can continue to be hard on yourself. There are no hard and fast rules of living life. It all varies from situation-to-situation. When you cannot change the situation and it becomes harder to stay for a longer period of time, choose to leave. And, the sense of relief you will experience once you decide to leave will be a hint enough to believe that you are on the right path.
2. When you find yourself in a toxic environment: The environment in which you live is an expression of what you are. No matter how much you stick to being yourself, the change in you due to your surroundings is inevitable. When you live in a toxic environment, your chance of turning into a negative being grows. A toxic environment is one where you feel unappreciated, uncomfortable or undervalued. So, whenever you start feeling overwhelmed with these feelings, take it as a warning and quit. And, just because a lot of people aren’t leaving, does not mean that you should also stay. Maybe, they choose to stick around because either they are used to that environment or their circumstances do not allow them to leave. (Also read: How To Read People Effectively)
3. When despite your best efforts, you cannot find a solution: Since childhood, parents teach their kids ‘to never give up’ and once they grow up, it is their teaching that helps them to fight back difficult situations of life. But, there comes a time when even after giving your best shot you do not succeed. For example, you might have been working hard for a promotion from last two appraisal cycles, but to your disappointment, you didn’t get one. In such a situation, do not fear quitting. Ask yourself, ‘will I gain something if I will not leave?’ or ‘will I give myself a better life by quitting’. Depending on your answer, opt for the best option. 4. When it hardly matters to you: When you invest your 100 percent into something, its success or failure becomes a matter of concern for you. But when you do it just for the sake of doing and consider it only a responsibility, definitely you have lost all interest in that work. It’s time to move out and find something new. Do not feel bad that you got disinterested in something which you yourself choose to do in the first place. Never stick to anything for the wrong reasons.
