From September 19, the 140 characters long tweets will be a thing of the past. Now, you may be allowed to post longer tweets as the media attachments like photos, videos, polls, GIFs, and usernames will be left aside from the counting of characters.
“This is the most notable change that we have made in the recent times around conversation in particular, and around giving people to the full expressiveness of the 140 characters,” said Jack Dorsey, the CEO, Twitter, as reported by The Verge.
The decision does not come as a surprise as Twitter came up with the plan back in May. But it did not mention a firm date for its new business plan. Now, it seems that the four month long wait is over as the plan is ready to roll out. Since, no official from twitter has confirmed the report; it still remains a mystery whether or not the changes will occur simultaneously or in stages. (Also read: Is It Time For A Digital Detox?)
If this change happens, using twitter for expression of views and ideas will get simplified as the abstruse rules of tweeting will be eased off.
It will be interesting to see how tweeps will react to the new development as when Twitter planned to increase its character limit back in 2015, the announcement met with disbelief, relief, and ridicule of the active Twitter users. In response to the ‘tweetstorm’ Dorsey rolled back the decision and was in all praises of 140 character tweets calling them ‘beautiful constraints’
