If you just upgraded to macOS Sierra and your Dropbox app is acting up, you’re not alone. Even with the latest version of the app, some users are experiencing strange behavior-error messages, confusing syncing icons, etc. Here’s what you can do to mitigate the annoyances.
If you’re experiencing any issues after the update, like Apple error messages or dialogue boxes when files are moved into Dropbox, confusing sync icons on or in the Dropbox folder, or issues with iCloud sync, the cause is likely iCloud not playing nice with your Dropbox folder. According to the Dropbox team, most of these problems occur when you have iCloud sync enabled, you have your Desktop or Documents folder synced to iCloud (this is enabled automatically during macOS Sierra installation), and have your Dropbox folder in either your Desktop or Documents folder. If you’re seeing those icons and error messages, here’s what you can do:
- Update to the latest version of Dropbox.
- Move Dropbox back to its default location (not in your Desktop or Documents folder).
- Disable iCloud notifications on your computer by opening Finder, clicking Applications, selecting iCloud, clicking Settings, and navigating to the Advanced menu.
There’s no reason you can’t use both Dropbox and iCloud to sync your files, but, as the folks at Dropbox explain, using both may lead to more issues like these. Dropbox doesn’t currently support a configuration where both iCloud and Dropbox can sync the same files.
