We all face problems. Some are frivolous; some are life changing. But more often than not they cause nothing more than stress. Whatever issues life presents us, whether small or big, we think about them. But there are some who think about it little too often than others. Studies show that overthinking leads to serious emotional distress. To escape that distress, many over-thinkers resort to unhealthy coping strategies, such as alcohol or food. Here are 5simple ideas to free yourself from over-thinking. (Also read: Do you always feel good things can never happen to you? Break free from Pattern Thinking)
Identify when you are thinking too much
The first stage of changing is to recognise the problem. More often than not people don’t think there is a problem so there is no need to change. First you need to understand when you are thinking too much. Only then you can focus on how to divert your mind.
Know that your decision will never be final
People often keep thinking because they want to come up with a grand finale decision. Well, that can never happen. Nobody can predict with complete accuracy the entirety of the future. Life is unpredictable. You may stay prepared but life will throw newer challenges at you. There is nothing wrong in planning, but thinking too much about how to succeed may not work all the time.
Don’t think of what can go wrong
In many cases, overthinking is caused by fear. When you focus on all the negative things that might happen, it’s easy to get into the overthinking mode. Remember the book ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne. The author claims that as we think and feel, a corresponding frequency is sent out into the universe which attracts back to us events and circumstances on that same frequency. For example, if a person thinks angry thoughts and feels angry, he will get angrier with time.
Be here and now
Living in the past, increases the risk of keeping the painful feelings alive which aggravates the sense of loss. Every time you find yourself retreating in the past, consciously pull yourself out. Remind yourself that staying in the past, will never change your present and the future. The only way feel happy and stop overthinking is to be in the present.
Make positive self talk a habit
Channelize your thoughts and make it positive instead of constantly thinking about what can go wrong or what went wrong. Make a note of your accomplishments. You don’t have to dwell too much in the past, you just have to look few months behind. Count the number of awards or appreciations you received, the stage shows you had been part of and skills that you learnt. It could be as simple as remembering the day your friend complimented you on your new look. But do it on an everyday basis. Practice positive self talk every day. Keep telling yourself how far you have come and count your blessings.
