“Energy vampires are emotionally immature individuals who have the sense that the whole world revolves around them. They are almost incapable of seeing things from another person’s perspective. They often lack empathy. They believe that they must take everything they can get from others and that giving anything will deprive them of essential resources. It’s as if the whole world exists just to serve them and you are the latest object upon which they have set their sights for exploitation,” says Sophie Henshaw, a leading clinical psychologist and author of Stressed, Depressed And Dreading Mondays.
Energy vampire can be a blamer, who blames everyone else without ever taking any responsibility, a guilt tripper, who knows how to make you feel bad, a jealous person who can never be happy for others or simply insecure and pulls others down to their level of low self-esteem.
Interact less with such people
Try to interact less with people who have negative thoughts or who are surrounded with negative environment. Not only does the thinking of the people matter but their ambience also leaves an after effect on each person’s personality.
Do not react but respond
Responding to the other person helps to overcome the stress due to the negative approach to life by the other person instead of a reaction. Judgement to the opinion of the other person may lead to a rough path. To avoid conflict, one should take up responding with patience.
Do not accuse directly
Don’t do character assassination, come what may. Directly accusing a hypocrite of not practicing what he preaches is useless, as that will only make them go defensive. You will also end up hurting them for life. Rather try to divert the attention back onto you or someone else. You can also give subtle signals on how you don’t agree to what he or she is saying. And when they do understand your signals, make sure to be appreciative and not point to past faults.
Keep your cool
Never take out your anger or be impulsive. Usually such people are very sensitive. They get very offended if you shout at them. It is also not a good approach to adapt in an office environment. Even if they irk you a lot, it is better to keep your calm.
Affirm your self-worth
You are more than what they make you to be. And you do have others in your life who are positive, genuine, and caring and inspire you to be your very best. Ignore energy vampires and spend quality time with people who cheer you up and bring out the best in you.
Just let it go
If you cannot avoid them, take a deep breath and let it go. True negative people, also called energy vampires, are constantly in an energy deficit, which leads to them to drain others of their energy. But there is no need to take their words to heart and spoiling your day. Only if you let them leech your energy, they will.
Take a walk
Going for a walk can quickly cool things down. Especially walk in the rain. Have you ever noticed the smell of the earth after rain? The smell apparently has a natural calming effect. Many studies suggest that nature helps boost our self-control and optimism. So, when we avoid going out in wet weather we miss out on some great mental benefits that come from walking in the rain.
