A recent study in the academic journal Psychology of Women Quarterly found that chivalry is associated with greater life satisfaction among men and women. Another study of more than 10,000 people from around the world found that the number one attribute that both young men and women seek in a mate is not money or beauty or intelligence, but kindness, which lies at the heart of the chivalrous act. Chivalry was a time-tested code of conduct for men passed down from generation to generation. So here are few ways men of this generation can also practice chivalry.
Hold open the door
You should hold open the door for people, especially when they are carrying heavy things or are not as physically fit as you are (injured, pregnant, elderly, etc). While there are some modern day girls who are against this idea, this courteous gesture is still very much appreciated by most ladies.
Be kind to the restaurant staff
You have to be kind to the wait staff when you are dining out with a woman or even otherwise. You should never treat them like they are there to be your servants. Even if you are comfortable with it, it reflects poorly on the person you are out with.
Pay attention to details
Chivalry means paying attention to details. You know women speak an average of about 7,000 words a day and men average just over 2,000? It’s natural for women to speak and they love men who pay attention to what they say. So, if you are all ears, you can very well score brownie points.
Practice good manners
Practicing good manners is an important component of chivalry. It’s disrespectful not to say thank you or sorry when you are supposed to. Also, ensure you don’t use swear words in front of women or in public. Be polite and use intelligent vocabulary. A gentleman will always be well-spoken. Also, if someone has a differing opinion on a topic, agree to disagree and move on. Resorting to name-calling or mouthing off to another person will only make you appear immature and hot-tempered.
Learn to cook few great meals
Women love a man who can cook. You don’t have to cook a five star meal. But learning to cook will not only impress her, it is one of life’s vital skills to possess. You can also make a coffee or tea for her and bring it to bed occasionally. It’s a small gesture that shows a lot of kindness.
Offer to take her coat
Women of today are all about being independent, but they still love it when men go out of their way to do special things for them. Getting her coat for her and helping her with her chair will only show her that you care for her and think that she’s special. No matter whether you’re attending a formal or casual social gathering, always take her coat at the start of the evening and get it for her at the end of the evening.
Pull out her chair before you sit down to dine
Before sitting down to pull out her chair for her and help her push it back in. It is a gesture that men of every generation before us followed and women have always loved it.
Always offer to pay the bill
Women may be more financially independent than they once were, but paying for a meal is still the chivalrous thing to do. It is a gesture of courtesy and respect. However, do not be stubborn about it if she insists on paying her way. While you should always offer to pick up the tab, if she insists on this, split the bill and offer to pay next time.
